The Obie lounge: A highly-versatile seating unit
Aneez | Mar 8 2008

Modular and multifunctional seating systems are the call of the present times. With the changing style of the society and the ever-shrinking living space, this becomes even more inevitable. Though we have a wide range of modular concepts to choose from, I feel the Obie lounge clearly beats them all.

The concept is the brainchild of Miss Irene Schneider, a student of Curtin University of technology, Australia. The Obie lounge is a low-back seating unit, which highlights the importance of user engagement and multifunctionality through user interaction. The main feature of this concept is the complete relief from any fixed form or shape; and the user can define his own design and mould the Obie lounge as per his personal needs.

The Obie lounge consists of a wooden frame that resembes the alphabet ‘S’, and a mattress with a couple of cushions. Just by rearranging the different elements, the Obie lounge can be transformed into a single low-back coach or two different seating units. One can totally eliminate the frame and use the matter and pillow as a floor bed. Moreover, the Obie lounge can be used indoors or outdoors.
