Sustainable kitchen to conserve resources
Jaiyant Cavale | Jul 8 2008

With sustainability and going green being the keywords today, it shouldn’t surprise us if we read that a student from Queensland University of Technology, Ms Kate Jaclin designed a sustainable kitchen. Kitchen is the center of activity in any household and is also the source of most waste. The aim of this project is to create a kitchen that helps a user to connect to the nature and be aware of the natural resources like water, energy and organic matter. It mimics an eco-cycle and there is no concept of waste as everything is recycled. The kitchen uses solar energy, water is recycled and used again, and the organic matter is converted to compost and a vegetable garden is incorporated. However, the kitchen is based on Western culture, which actually is a good thing since most of the consumption of resources takes place by them. The kitchen can also be easily refurbished and uses recycled bio-plastic materials, which were designed for injection molding. The kitchen is also ergonomically designed and the user’s safety has been kept in mind while designing it. Except for the oven and the stove, everything about this kitchen is sustainable, right from its conception. The designer is expecting to win the Australian Design Award.
